Illuminated Reef Collective,
The Illuminated Reef

Inspired by BareBones’s 2014 production of ‘Metamorphosoup’, in which a variety of illuminated ancient sea creatures created an other-worldly undersea landscape, The Illuminated Reef honors the coral reef and the community of biodiversity it supports. Using paper lanterns to represent the mobile creatures of the seascape and various sculptural elements built of new, discarded and repurposed materials to represent the coral reef community, the project brings to life a living community of artists, volunteers and visitors to perceive, move and act in a public art display to honor the coral reef community. Using LEDs to illuminate lanterns from within and black lighting in combination with fluorescent paints, visitors will be able to experience The Reef from many vantage points throughout the Mill City District. Visitors are also invited to participate by carrying a lantern in a crowd-sourced spontaneous production of The Illuminated Reef. There will be acoustical music accompaniment, but musicians are invited to bring their own instruments and join in. By breaking down the barriers between audience and performer, terrestrial and marine, real and imagined, we hope to nourish the interconnectedness of all things.

The Illuminated Reef Collective consists of artists Peter Schulze, Tara Fahey, Janet Groenert, Mina Leierwood, and the BareBones community.

This project is supported in part by BareBones Productions.
